LITTLE BANG PROGRAMS

Fun facilitated workshops for 3-5-year-olds that introduce children to the basics of science but feel more like play than education.  Suitable for libraries, preschools and childcare centres.

LITTLE BANG DISCOVERY PROGRAM

Little Bang is the flagship program of Children’s Discovery. The program consists of fun, facilitated workshops for 3-5-year-olds that introduce children to the basics of science but feel more like play than education. The program harnesses the many benefits of early childhood education and importantly engages all children before the onset of gender stereotypes.

All Little Bang workshops can be modified to suit older children, generally up to 9 years.

LITTLE BANG

An overview of the carefully researched and specifically designed play-based learning activities in the Little Bang Program.

Little Bang kits contain all the materials and equipment needed to deliver the program to 15 participants. The program can be run multiple times with different cohorts.

SESSION 1: COLLECTING AND CLASSIFYING

Being a junior discoverer takes some special skills. In the first session participants learn how to sort and match household objects and items from the Little Bang kit.

SESSION 2: MEASURING

Weighing and measuring is one of the first and most important skills of science discovery. Participants learn how to balance unevenly weighted objects and have a take-home project to make a mobile.

SESSION 3: EXPERIMENTING

In this session, participants are encouraged to ask questions and design their own experiments to find the answers. This session puts participants’ measuring, observational and recording skills to the test. Participants prepare to conduct an experiment at home to share in the final session, The Science Fair.

SESSION 4: SCIENCE FAIR

In the final session participants share what they have discovered in their at-home experiment. There are more table-top science activities followed by a graduation ceremony where each child receives a certificate.

An absolutely excellent program, that encouraged me to do further research and add to the program, to suit the scientists. I cannot speak highly enough of it.

LITTLE BANG PLUS

Continue the Little Bang learning journey with eight sessions of new experiments and further investigations for participants to undertake at home.

The Little Bang Plus kit contains all the materials and equipment to deliver the program to 15 participants.

SESSION 1: TAKING A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO INVESTIGATIONS

This session revisits the scientific principles learnt in Little Bang. Participants explore how to create a fair investigation by working out what one thing to change while keeping everything else the same.

SESSION 2: LOVELY LIGHT AND EQUIPMENT IN SCIENCE

Participants explore how light works, and like scientists they describe the equipment they use in their experiments.

SESSION 3: WONDERFUL WATER AND MEASURING ACCURATELY

Water makes life on earth possible. This session looks in depth at the wonders of water and participants learn and practise accurate measuring skills.

SESSION 4: OUR PRECIOUS PLANET AND INVESTIGATION STEPS

This session looks at what makes our planet so special. Participants also learn about the scientific way of doing things in a careful and step-by-step (methodical) way.

SESSION 5: PHYSICAL CHANGE AND MAKING CLOSE OBSERVATIONS

Experiments often result in changes. This session explores different types of physical changes with participants making observations, questioning why things change and learning about solids, liquids and gases.

SESSION 6: ALWAYS-THERE AIR AND RECORDING RESULTS

We use air every second, although we often don’t notice it. This session of air-mazing experiments has participants practising recording results in different ways.

SESSION 7: CHEMICAL CHANGE AND VISUALLY REPRESENTING RESULTS

Experiments can result in chemical changes where compounds combine to make something new. This session explores chemical changes and visual representations of experimental results using graphs.

SESSION 8: OUR BEAUTIFUL BODIES AND LOOKING FOR PATTERNS

Bodies are amazing sense machines. Participants learn about some lesser-known senses and look for patterns in experimental results that help support theories. The session concludes with graduation and a celebration.

HOW IT WORKS FOR FACILITATORS

  1. Order your Little Bang kit with all the materials and equipment needed to deliver the program to 15 participants.
  2. Attend an optional train-the-trainer session.
  3. Schedule all the Little Bang sessions in your venue.
  4. Invite your community to attend. Note: Little Bang sessions in community spaces are aimed at 3-5-year-old children with accompanying adults.
  5. Hold the Little Bang sessions and see science learning come alive!
