BIG BANG SCIENCE PROGRAM

Fun STEM-based workshops for children aged 5-8 years and 9-12 years introducing the concepts of chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy and palaeontology.

BIG BANG SCIENCE PROGRAM

The Big Bang Science Program is a series of STEM-based workshops designed for children aged 5 to 8 years old and 9 to 12 years old, with accompanying adults always welcome.  Workshops are designed to introduce participants to the concepts of chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy and palaeontology.

All activities have the aim of instilling confidence in asking and answering questions about the natural world through genuine science-based investigations.  For example: What kinds of explosive reactions await in your kitchen pantry? Can balloons really demonstrate scientific principles?

Big Bang Science Workshops are suitable for libraries, venues offering science clubs, school holiday programs or school incursions.  There are three Big Bang programs, each consisting of eight one-hour workshops.

For event managers and Sydney-based libraries we offer an expanded range of Big Bang experiences, download our Big Bang Flyer for details.

BIG BANG WORKSHOPS

Workshops are designed as 60-minute sessions for up to 25 children. Most can be adapted to run for different times and to suit different age groups.

Big Bang kits contain equipment and materials for up to 25 participants with facilitators providing readily available, inexpensive consumables.

SERIES 1.  BIG BANG 5-8 YEARS

AIR ALL AROUND US

Get blown away in the investigation of the invisible and discover everything about the air all around us – what it is made of, how it behaves, and how it keeps us alive. Plus, investigate air as a destructive force and make a tornado in a bottle to take home.

ALL ABOUT PLANTS

Do you have a green thumb? This workshop explores the fascinating world of plants. We examine the structure and function of leaves and flowers, make a pressing to preserve them, and design a growth experiment using potted seeds to continue at home.

BALANCING THE IMPROBABLE

Explore the science of balance through a series of ‘centre of mass’ experiments and make your own gravity-defying Wacky Wobbler to take home!

DINO DOINGS

The roar-some prehistoric world of dinosaurs! Explore the science of fossils, make a dinosaur impression fossil and learn how we know so much about creatures that became extinct 65 million years ago. Create a fizzy dinosaur egg to take home to hatch.

EGGSPERIMENTS

Eggsperiment with major ideas in physics, chemistry and biology and explain everyday phenomena using the humble egg!

I LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT

Linked to Early Stage 1 Science and Technology Curriculum

Discover what it really takes to ‘move it’ like the cast of Madagascar. Explore the laws of motion in a fun and interactive way and maybe learn a trick to impress your friends and family.

MAGIC MAGNETS

We discover what things are magnetic and how two magnets interact with each other. Create a temporary magnet and build your own magnetic fishing game to take home.

SOUNDS OF SILENCE

Linked to Stage 1 Science and Technology Curriculum

Lend your ears to the exploration of sound through a series of hands-on (and ears-on) sound experiments and make your own kazoo to take home.

SERIES 2. BIG BANG 9-12 YEARS

OUR AMAZING BODIES

The human body is the world’s greatest machine! Discover the inputs to our bodies through a series of fun but challenging activities that explore seven senses. Examine how the brain is essential to processing all these inputs and model how helmets can protect our brains using a melon!

SCIENCE OF SHERBET

Explore the sometimes explosive effects of acid-base reactions to discover how sherbet tingles your tongue, and make your own to take home.

SLIME

Use your hands to explore all things that ooze, squish and generally flow in unusual ways. Explore the behaviour and properties of different slimes and make your own guar gum slime to investigate back at home.

UNBELIEVABUBBLES

Mix like a chemist as you make your own bubble mixture with our secret bubble mixture recipe and craft some bubble blowing devices. Use your scientific investigation skills to explain how bubbles work, while also learning to master the art of Bubbleology!

WATER WORKS

Explore the wonderful water molecule through a series of wet and wild challenges. Discover the magic of water using a selection of household items and repeat at home to challenge family and friends.

WIND THINGS

Explore the science of flight through a series of construction activities. Investigate the roles of lift, drag, thrust and weight to explain how things fly. Make a model wing, a whirligig, and a paper plane to take home.

SEE LIGHT IN A NEW LIGHT

Linked to Stage 3 Science and Technology Curriculum

Experience light like never before as you experiment with light and how it behaves and make a shadow puppet to take home.

TRICKS OF THE EYE

Explore the structure and function of the eye and how it influences how we perceive the world around us. Investigate how our eyes and brain sometimes trick us through a variety of visual illusions, and make a thaumatrope to take home.

SERIES 3.  BIG BANG 5-12 YEARS

AIR BALL BASKETBALL

Sport meets science in this creative construction workshop as you explore the nature of air and how it behaves and construct an Air Ball Basketball device to take home.

AWESOME ASTRONOMY

Explore all things lunar as you make your own phases of the moon model to take home and test your critical thinking skills in a moon survival challenge!

CHEMISTRY LAB

Investigate liquids that mix, those that are not so friendly and those that break up the party with simple experiments you can repeat at home.

DNA EXTRACTION

Why do you look and behave the way you do? All living organisms contain a molecular code within their cells with codes for everything needed for life and reproduction. Extract and physically see the DNA of various fruits and explore how genetic traits are inherited.

FEEL THE PRESSURE

Investigate the invisible force of air pressure. Explore the amazing behaviour of the air all around us and make a Cartesian Diver to take home.

KITCHEN CHEMISTRY

The kitchen isn’t only for cooking! Explore clever chemistry experiments you can do at home, using common kitchen cooking ingredients and household items. Explore using chemical indicators to help identify acids, bases and neutral chemicals, and create secret messages or artwork to take home.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU

Linked to Stage 2 Science and Technology Curriculum

The Jedi aren’t the only ones who use the force! Explore the forces we experience every day in a fun and interactive way and maybe learn a trick or two to impress your friends and family.

POTATO CLOCK

Discover how electrical circuits and batteries work by experimenting with electrical conductors, and create a battery that powers a digital clock, simply using zinc and copper electrodes and a potato.

The Big Bang workshop kits are easy to follow, allowing any staff member to run the sessions. The kits provide all that is needed for fun and interactive sessions for children to explore the wonderful world of STEAM.

HOW IT WORKS FOR FACILITATORS

  1. Order your Big Bang Book of Science and Big Bang workshop kits. There are several kits to choose from, eg Magic Magnets, Science of Sherbet, Air Ball Basketball. Each contains sufficient equipment and consumables for up to 25 participants.
  2. Refer to the Big Bang Book of Science on how to conduct the workshop. Most workshops can be adapted to suit different age groups.
  3. Print out the relevant handouts, where applicable.
  4. Schedule the workshop in your venue.
  5. Invite your community to attend.
  6. Hold your Big Bang workshops and see science learning come alive.
